Mary Jo Spears Glass, or MJ as she is known to her church family and friends, has an unquenchable love for God and of His Word. MJ’s life mission has been to help lead others who are in search of joy, peace, and salvation to God. Therefore, it is not surprising that one of her favorite gospel songs is “I love to tell the story.”
MJ spent her early childhood in Mississippi, where her father, a Pentecostal preacher, pastored a church. At an early age, MJ showed a natural talent for music and for being able to connect with an audience. By the age of 11, she was playing the piano and singing solos in her father’s church. Several years later, she helped her older brother evangelize throughout Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
In 1952, MJ married Charles Earl Glass. They relocated to St. Paul, Minnesota, where Bro. Glass attended Apostolic Bible Institute, Inc.
Bro. Glass and MJ evangelized throughout the country for several years before he was called of God to become the pastor of the First Pentecostal Church located in Sherman, Texas. Perhaps it was no coincidence that MJ played the piano and sang at that very church years earlier! She would later become one of the members of the original Galileans, a gospel musical group that grew out of the First Pentecostal Church.
Through determination, dedication, and a strong faith in God, Bro. Glass and MJ saw the First Pentecostal Church, now Faith Church, grow from a small congregation of mostly women into the outstanding congregation of men, women, and children who comprise Faith Church today. MJ’s love for souls and her dedication to God’s work has played a pivotal role in the growth of Faith Church.
This includes Project Reach, an outreach ministry created by and through MJ’s vision, which encourages the Faith Church congregation to focus outward on the needs of others and to help meet those needs through love, joy, compassion, and faith. Project Reach is but one of a number of successful ministries within Faith Church in which MJ remains actively involved. Her motto is that there are no strangers who attend Faith Church, only friends who have yet to be met. MJ, through her teachings and actions, has fostered a warm and friendly congregation who makes every member, visitor, and guest feel welcome.
Anyone who spends even a minute around MJ will feel the warmth, joy, and happiness that she exudes. MJ is truly a fun and energizing person to be around, but one of her greatest attributes is her ability to connect with individuals on an emotional and spiritual level – and to both join and rejoice with them in realizing their healing, salvation, deliverance, and other victories. Yes, MJ loves to tell the story of Jesus and of his love and she looks forward to sharing that story with you at Faith Church of Sherman soon.
